Some questions you might have about sun screens

If you’re looking to lower your home’s energy costs and cut the glare and heat of the sun, you should consider adding sun screens or solar screens, to your home. To help you learn more about our sun screens and solar screens, here are some answers to the most popular questions we get asked often.

How do sun screens work?

all kinds of screensSun screens are made from a thicker, denser mesh coated in PVC. The denser mesh works in three ways. First, they provide additional shade for your windows. They reflect sunlight away, which reduce the amount of heat and rays that transfer through your windows. Solar screens also capture the heat of the sun on its way to your windows and dissipate that heat away. This prevents the glass in your windows from heating up while also radiating heat into your home.

How big of an impact do solar screens have on your home’s energy bills?

People always want to know how well solar screens work. The answer is they have a significant difference on the heat gain in your home. Solar screens can lower the temperature in your home by 8 to 15 degrees, which means your air conditioner doesn’t have to work nearly as hard to cool your home on those hot summer days. Because your home doesn’t heat up to extreme temperatures, solar screens can also help you save money on your home’s energy bills.

Do solar screens darken your home?

Some people worry that solar screens will make their home too dark. In reality, solar screens cut the sunlight coming into your home by 15 to 25 percent. For many homeowners, this low level of light is often a benefit. Without solar screens, windows that receive direct afternoon light are sometimes too warm to sit near during the summer. They also provide uncomfortable glares within your home.

Do sun screens block your view?

Sun screens have a thicker mesh than traditional window screens. Solar screens come in different thicknesses, so you will have some say in the intensity of your screen’s look. Because the mesh is thicker, sun screens are more noticeable within a window or door. However, as with traditional window screens, you won’t notice the screens in your window as you get used to it.

Do all windows need solar screens?

You can get all the benefits of sun screens without have them installed on every window in your home. Sun screens should be installed on the sides of your home that are hit with the heat of the day, generally the west and south sides of your home. However, some homeowners opt to install sun screens on more windows for privacy or uniformity.

How do I get sun screens installed on my home?

Most homeowners don’t realize until they look at screen options that window screens don’t come in standard sizes. This means installing new screens including sun screens, usually requires custom installation. Installing sun screens need to begin with a consultation with our professionals, then we will proceed to measurement and installation. If you’re interested in saving money with solar screens, call A to Z Window Screens to schedule your consultation now!

Enjoy the Outdoor Weather with Quality Window Screens

Fall brings delightful temperatures to the Sacramento area, but to best enjoy the outdoor weather, you need quality window screens! Quality window screens let the breeze in while keeping the bugs out. Window screens come with other benefits, as well! Depending on the types of screens you choose, window screens can upgrade the look of your home, save you money on your energy bills, give you added privacy and security, and keep your pets safe.

Benefits of Quality Window Screens

With beautiful weather, the primary function of window screens becomes obvious; quality window screens keep bugs out while letting the breeze in. If your window screens are warped or torn, they won’t work. Without quality window screens, you can’t enjoy the pleasant fall temperatures. Even worse, you could find yourself cranking the air conditioning to compensate for having to keep your windows closed, which leaves you with higher energy bills. If your home is without window screens, if you are missing screens in some windows, or if rips, tears or warping have rendered your screens unusable, now is the time to have them replaced with quality window screens so you can enjoy the weather!

Elements of a Quality Window Screen

Not all window screens are created equal. If you have window screens that are warped, bent, ripped or rusted, you probably know that a low-quality window shows its age quickly. A quality window screen will stand up to the elements year after year. So how do you judge a quality window screen from one that will need to be replaced? A quality window screen is custom-made to fit your windows. The frames will support perfectly tensioned screens, and the frames will have sturdy metal corners rather than cheap plastic corners that become brittle and crack over time.

Window Screen Options

Fresh air isn’t the only thing you stand to gain from new, quality window screens. There are a variety of window screen options to meet your unique needs and provide you with the benefits you seek. Some window screen options include:

  • Pet screens. Pet screens feature a heavy-duty mesh that’s meant to stand up to animal’s claws and animals enthusiasm to prevent rips and tears.
  • Solar screens. Solar screens are made from thicker fibers and a denser weave to help block the sun’s light and heat from your home. They can help reduce the load on your air conditioner by as much as 30 percent.
  • Retractable screens. If you want to enjoy the breeze and the other benefits that come with window screens but don’t want to block your view, retractable screens are the answer! Retractable screens roll down when you want to use them and roll away when you want to open up your view.
  • Decorative screens. Screens can complement your home’s style. You can choose screens in custom colors or with decorative grids to suit your taste and the look of your home.

The Clearview Retractable Screen Difference

Screen doors present homeowners with a dilemma. Screens can increase home efficiency. In addition, allow you to open up your doors to enjoy the breeze while keeping out bugs and other pests. However, they come with some disadvantages. Blocking your view, snapping closed dangerously hard, and getting in the way when you are carrying food outside are just a few.

At A to Z Window Screens, we can help you solve this dilemma with Clearview Retractable Screens! With Clearview Retractable screen doors, you can enjoy all of the benefits of screen doors without the drawbacks.

About Clearview Retractable Screens

Clearview Retractable Screens are unlike any other screen doors on the market. These screens roll up into a small hose on one side of your door frame. When you want to have a screen door in place, they roll smoothly across their track and over your doorway. That means with Clearview Retractable Screens, you have a screen door when you want to open up your home and enjoy the breeze. Plus, you can store away the door when you want an unobstructed opening. Whether it’s allowing you to carry things in and out of the house without a barrier or to allow you to have an unobstructed view through your door.

Another major difference with Clearview Retractable Screens: The doors are guaranteed not to snap into place. Clearview’s patented Safe Glide speed reducer means your screen slides safely and slowly. Now you don’t have to worry about having your heels caught by an opening or closing door. Also, you don’t have to worry about children pinching their fingers or about pets pinching paws or tails. Clearview Retractable Screens provide you with a safe alternative to traditional screen doors that can pose a hazard to you, your children, or your pets.

Customize Your Screen Door

Clearview Retractable Screens also differ from other screen doors and other retractable screens. How? You can customize them to your home! Clearview Retractable Screens come in a variety of colors, so you can be sure that your screen door fits with your home’s style. They can be outfitted to single door frames, French doors, or sliding doors. Clearview Retractable screen doors can also be made of traditional screen mesh. That’s not all. Other choices like solar mesh screening, that blocks up to 60 percent of the sun’s heat to make your home more efficient; or security screening, which is five times stronger than traditional fiberglass screening.

It’s not too early to plan for new sun screens this spring!

If you have considered reducing the sun’s impact on your home with solar screens, it’s not too early to start planning to install sun screens this spring! In fact, if you want to have your windows ready to combat the sun’s glare, we suggest purchasing sun screens between January and March to miss the summer rush. When you purchase your sun screens early, they can be installed in two to three weeks, half the time it can take during the busy summer months!

What are the benefits of sun screens?

Sun screens, also called solar screens or privacy screens, protect your home from the sun’s glare. The densely woven mesh provides shade, and reflects and absorbs the sun’s heat and light, preventing it from entering your home. If you have rooms that are made uncomfortable by the sun’s rays or heat, you should consider sun screens!

They reduce the buildup of heat in your home. Rooms with sun screens installed are up to 15 degrees cooler! That can lower home cooling costs by 25 to 30 percent. That also means your home’s cooling system will be less taxed by trying to cool overheated rooms.

Sun screens prevent harmful UV rays from entering your home. The screens block up to 90 percent of UV rays. That can help to protect your furniture, rugs and floors from fading and sun damage.

Sun screens also can make your home more comfortable. They reduce the glare of the sun, while still allowing you to open the windows and enjoy the breeze. Sun screens allow you to reduce the sun’s heat in your home, without having to hide behind curtains or blinds! Sun screens are made from a durable, densely woven polyester yarn that has been coated with PVC. They resist fading and can be removed easily for cleaning.

What are the options for sun screens?

Sun screens come in a variety of colors and options to suit your taste and the style of your home. Classic black can offer a dramatic contrast for windows, while gray, beige or brown offers a softer look. Sun screens even come in a multi-color weave to imitate the stucco finish of your home.

If you’re concerned that sun screens will provide too stark a look for your home, you can consider a decorative grid. Sun screens can be fabricated with a variety of grid patterns to match your existing window grid patterns and the style of your home.

Don’t wait to consider your sun screen options!

If you think sun screens may answer your home cooling problems, call A to Z Window Screens at 916-408-2496 today! Never too early to think about new sun screens!

With the beautiful year round temperatures here in Sacramento, it should come as no surprise that many homeowners want to keep their home’s comfortable without the added expense of running the A/C. Would you like to be able to keep your house cooler while saving energy and avoiding an A/C war with your family all at the same time? It’s never too early to think about new sunscreens for your home!

Solar energy is a free energy resource that when properly managed can be used to provide needed daylighting and heat energy in a building. Unmanaged solar heat gain introduces heat energy into a building when and where it’s not needed. When sunlight enters your home, it turns into heat, which in turn increases the amount of electric energy required to maintain comfortable conditions within the building. You’ll keep your house cooler if you reduce solar heat gain by keeping sunlight out. Shading devices can be a very effective way to lessen solar heat gain. Exterior shading is more effective at reducing solar gains than interior shades (mini blinds are a common example) because the solar heat absorbed or deflected by the shading device isn’t transferred into the building. Sunscreens are a perfect exterior shading option for all homeowners!

The majority of sunlight striking an unprotected glass window passes through into your home, while only a small percentage is reflected. Sunscreens dramatically reduce the amount of sunlight striking the window. Most of the sun’s heat is absorbed or reflected by the screen and carried away by convective air currents created by the warm screen. Sunscreens are made to reduce anywhere from 80-90% of the sun’s heat before it enters your home via your windows. This significant reduction decreases the amount of heat that your air conditioning unit has to remove from your home. Absorbing heat and dispersing it into the air surrounding the screen significantly lower the amount of heat that actually reaches the window.

You may be wondering if new sunscreens are right for you and your home. This is a valid question. Sunscreens offer many benefits, such as:

• Saving energy by reducing you’re A/C use up to 30%;
• Reducing utility costs (this reduction alone will often pay for the sunscreens within 2-4 years);
• Reducing fading and sun rot on your furniture, drapes and carpet (which is commonly caused by the sun’s harsh UV rays);
• Making your home more inviting and less cave-like (face it, keeping your shades/curtains/blinds closed all day really reduces the amount of natural lighting inside your home); and
• Increasing your daytime privacy by allowing you to see out (unobstructed views are nice) while not allowing anyone to see in.

In an attempt to keep the house cool, many homeowners shut their blinds or curtains. Unfortunately for them, that’s not a very effective method, as shutting the interior window coverings only keeps the direct sunlight from pouring into the room. Unbeknownst to you, the window’s hot glass is still radiating heat past the window coverings. Need an added bit of encouragement to make the decision to have new sunscreens installed? Many utility companies (SMUD, PG&E and Roseville Electric to name a few) believe so strongly in sunscreens that they often offer their residential customers a sizable rebate for installing them! Rebate offers vary from year to year and usually are available until funds run out. A to Z is familiar with all current rebate programs and will be happy to help you obtain and complete all necessary forms. Any of our sales representatives would be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding current utility rebates or our many sunscreen options. Call us today!

Keep the Afternoon Sun out with a Custom Solar Screen

Allowing as much natural light into a space as possible while also controlling heat and glare in addition to maintaining the homeowner’s connection to the outside world can be a difficult balancing act to manage. Today’s interiors are full of windows, which is a beautiful thing! However, as anyone who has lived with lots of windows can attest, along with the abundance of glass come higher temperatures and, sometimes, uncomfortable brightness and/or glare. If your home is full of windows and you’re looking for a way to utilize the natural light (which can save you a tremendous amount on your electric bills) while not forcing yourself to crank up the A/C, custom solar screens are the perfectly engineered solution to this dilemma, allowing the best that your windows have to offer to shine through.

What are solar screens anyway?

Solar screens are a marvel of science! They’re specially made window screens that cover an entire window in order to block the sun’s rays and heat before hitting the window’s glass. Custom solar screens can make your home more comfortable, decreasing both heat and glare while maintaining the view and the connection to nature and the outdoors. Light is powerful, which is why it doesn’t take much openness in solar screen fabrics to provide excellent view-through. Solar fabrics are woven to very precise and exacting standards, controlling the amount of surface area that is left open; fabrics with openness between 3% and 10% provide excellent levels of view through in combination with excellent levels of solar performance.

Total Lighting Control is Possible!

Solar screens are designed to control light without eliminating it altogether. Like sunglasses for your windows, solar screen fabric—a densely woven polyester yarn coated with a PVC vinyl coating that is made to withstand years of weathering from the sun’s intense heat—reduces glare while allowing excellent views to the outside. You can block up to 99% of harmful UV rays, which keeps the heat out and keeps your home cool. Blocking these harmful rays helps you protect your valuable furnishings and interior finishes, including flooring, rugs and walls.

Customizable to Meet your Needs

Solar screens are available in a wide variety of colors, styles, and openness factors, one of which is sure to look great on your home. These fabrics fall into three categories—dark fabrics, light fabrics and high-performance reflective fabrics—all of which provide:

• Heat and glare control
• Natural light management
• A visible connection to outside
• UV protection

The best way to find a color and fabric that suits your purpose is to make an appointment for an in-home consultation where you can see samples of the different colors to learn how each one performs differently in your home environment. To see which colors might look best on your home, check out our sunscreen gallery.

Unlike the ordinary insect screens on your windows, solar screens are a special kind of outdoor window screen that homeowners have installed for a variety of reasons. If you air conditioner never stops running and/or can’t keep up with the demand, you should consider purchasing sunscreens for your windows. They are one of the most effective, least expensive ways to keep the heat out of your house and more money in your pocket. A to Z Window Screens is one of the biggest solar screen dealers in California and has the expertise to help you get the most bang for your sunscreen buck!
