Sliding Security Door: FAQs
What is a sliding security door, and how does it differ from a standard sliding screen door?
We all know what a sliding screen door is… it is a lightweight screen door that slides back and forth in front of your sliding glass doors on wheels within a small track system. The poor quality sliding screen door that comes with the house are constantly falling off the tracks, not sliding smoothly, don’t lock, and offer no semblance of security whatsoever. They’ll do an ok job keeping out the bugs, but what about the thugs?
Unfortunately, the pests and parasites of the two-legged variety can easily gain entry into your home by simply cutting the screen fabric, reaching inside and un-doing the locks…. Or by simply grabbing the screen door and ripping it off the doorway completely. Anyone who has dealt with a flimsy sliding screen door that jumps the track or buckles knows exactly how little security they offer.
A sliding security door, however, is a completely different animal altogether…… similar to a standard sliding screen door, a sliding security doort slides back and forth within a track system and will keep out the bugs, but it is also built like a sherman tank in order to keep out the thugs, too! A sliding security door frame is constructed from heavy-duty extruded aluminum – far thicker and more rigid than the flimsy rolled aluminum used in standard sliding screen doors. And the screen mesh is not constructed of an easly cut fabric, but is made out of a case-hardened stainless steel, which is woven in order to mimic the look of traditional screen material, but is exceptionally difficult to cut, puncture, or push through without specialized tools. In addition, the track system is reinforced and designed so the door cannot simply be lifted out or knocked off its runners.
Most importantly, sliding security doors feature robust locking mechanisms – often multi-point systems – that anchor the door firmly to the frame when locked, as opposed to the simple latch clips found on standard sliding screens.
The result is a door that slides and functions exactly like a screen door, allowing full ventilation and an unobstructed view, but that provides genuine resistance to forced entry. It’s the same concept as a security screen door but rather than swinging open, these security screen doors are engineered specifically for the wide sliding openings common on patio sliding glass doors.
Are sliding security doors actually secure? Aren’t sliding glass doors one of the most vulnerable entry points in a home?
Yes, and Yes – and that’s exactly why sliding security doors exist as a product category.
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to get the breeze all night long through your sliding glass door while you sleep peacefully without worry? On nice days, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to get the airflow all day long safely while you are out working or running errands? If this describes you, sliding security doors are the best way to accomplish these goals.
Standard sliding glass doors and sliding screen doors are notoriously easy to break into quietly and in just a matter of moments. The typical attack methods include lifting the panel off its track, breaking the glass, cutting through the standard lightweight screen mesh, or simply forcing the basic sliding screen door’s latch open by force. Because they’re so easy to break into, it’s no surprise that patio and sliding door openings are one of the most common entry points for home intruders.
A purpose-built sliding security door addresses each of these vulnerabilities directly:
- Anti-lift design: Quality sliding security doors incorporate anti-lift features built into the track system, meaning the panel cannot be lifted out of the track from the outside the way a standard slider can.
- Stainless steel mesh: The woven stainless steel mesh used in security-grade sliding doors is designed to withstand knife slashing, impact force, and prying attempts that would instantly destroy standard screen material.
- Heavy-duty frames: The extruded aluminum frame is engineered to resist bending, deformation, and pry attacks that would collapse a standard slider almost immediately.
- Frame Interlock: When in the closed position, our double sliding security doors have an interlock mechanism that locks the two separate security panels together creating a bug-tight seal and making it impossible to pry the two panels apart while standing outside of the home.
On their own, sliding security doors are a serious deterrent and a real physical barrier. As part of a broader home security approach – good exterior lighting, quality locks on your primary sliding glass door, and awareness of other entry points – they make your sliding door opening significantly harder to breach.
Will a sliding security door affect the airflow and light coming into my home?
One of the primary reasons homeowners install sliding glass doors in the first place is to connect indoor and outdoor living spaces – to get fresh air flowing through the house and let natural light pour in, while maintaining excellent visibility to the outside world. A security solution that compromises those benefits would defeat the purpose of a sliding glass door entirely! So how can you have your cake and eat it too? .
Sliding security doors are specifically designed to preserve both airflow and visibility. Here’s how:
- Airflow: The stainless steel mesh used in quality sliding security doors is woven at a gauge fine enough to allow excellent air circulation. With our Meshtec stainless steel screen material,, airflow is comparable to – or even better than – standard fiberglass insect screening because the steel mesh maintains its shape and doesn’t sag or distort in ways that can restrict airflow over time.
- Natural light: The Meshtec stainless steel mesh is woven tightly enough to keep mosquitoes and flies out while still being open enough to allow strong natural light transmission. Your indoor spaces won’t feel darker with the security door closed, and, after a day or two, you’ll hardly notice the stainless steel security screen panel.
- Visibility: Looking outward through the mesh, visibility is surprisingly clear and natural – you can see your backyard, pool, patio, or yard without obstruction. From the outside looking in, the sliding security door looks very similar to a normal sliding screen door.
What you’ll notice is that the door feels and functions like a screen door in every practical sense – with the added confidence of knowing you are genuinely secure.
Can a sliding security door be installed on any sliding door opening?
Sliding security doors can be fitted to a wide variety of opening configurations, but there are some important variables that affect what’s possible and how the installation is approached.
- Opening width and height: Sliding security doors can be custom-manufactured to suit a wide range of opening dimensions. Whether your sliding opening is a standard 6-foot patio door or a wider 8- or 10-foot doorwall, a custom-fabricated panel can be built to match. This is one of the key advantages of working with a company that builds to measure rather than selling off-the-shelf units.
- Single vs. double panel configurations: Some sliding openings use a single sliding panel alongside a fixed panel. Others – particularly wider openings – use two sliding panels that meet in the middle. Security doors can be configured for both scenarios, including double sliding setups where both panels lock together at the center as well as at the outer edges using an interlock system ensuring the doors can’t be pried apart while standing outside of the home.
- Track condition: The condition of your existing sliding screen door track system on your sliding door frame is irrelevant because our sliding security door does not use your old flimsy tracks. Our sliding security doors use their own dedicated track system that’s installed independently on the front, outside surface of your sliding glass door frame…. And this can actually be beneficial if the existing tracks are worn or damaged.
- Frame and wall condition: Your home’s surrounding 2X4 and 2X6 door and wall framing structure needs to be in sound condition in order to properly anchor the security door and it’s accompanying frame & track system. We assess this during our on-site consultation.
Every installation at AtoZ Window Screens starts with accurate on-site measurements and a thorough assessment of your specific opening – there are no assumptions made from standard sizes, and it’s why we can only give a rough pricing range over the phone. But once our technician gets out to your home, they will provide you with an exact quote for your particular installation.
How is a sliding security door different from just adding a security bar or rod to my existing sliding door?
Adding a bar, rod, or cut-down wooden dowel to the track of a sliding glass door is a common DIY security measure – and while it does prevent the door from sliding open, it leaves almost every other vulnerability wide open.
A track bar or security rod:
- Converts your sliding glass door into a NON-Sliding glass door, but does nothing to protect against someone cutting or punching through the standard glass panel
- Does nothing to address the standard screen door, which remains easy to cut, lift, or punch through
- Provides no ventilation benefit – you can’t use your sliding glass door while the door is open for airflow
- Looks improvised and doesn’t add any value to the home
A sliding security door:
- Provides a purpose-built custom made security barrier over the entire opening
- The stainless steel mesh resists cutting, tearing, and impact
- Can be locked in place while the primary glass door is fully open – meaning you can have fresh air flowing through the house with genuine security in place
- Is professionally installed, aesthetically finished, and adds to the home’s appearance and value
- Addresses the opening comprehensively rather than patching one specific weak point
For homeowners who want to leave their primary sliding glass door open during the day in order to enjoy the breeze, hear the backyard, or create indoor-outdoor flow – a sliding security door is the only real solution. A track bar is incompatible with that goal; a sliding security door makes it possible to achieve these goals safely, whether you are home throughout the day or not!
What materials are used, and how do they hold up in Sacramento’s climate?
While we truly love all of our customers, in actuality, we prefer to only see them when we are selling or installing quality products…. We don’t want to have to come out repeatedly in order to fix or repair something that was poor quality to begin with ;-). Therefore, AtoZ only sells the best quality products that will give our customers many years of trouble -free breezes. While high quality products sometimes cost more on the front end, they are usually less expensive on the back end for everyone involved in the transaction ;-). Therefore, wise consumers must always be sure to compare the quality of the products being offered by multiple companies before making their final purchase decision. Here’s a brief breakdown of some of the specs of our sliding security doors.
- The mesh: High-quality sliding security doors use the original meshtec stainless steel woven 316-grade marine stainless steel mesh. Grade 316 is specifically formulated for enhanced corrosion resistance – it’s the same grade used in marine and coastal applications where salt, moisture, and UV exposure are constant factors. In Sacramento’s climate – hot dry summers, occasional wet winters, and significant UV exposure – this grade of mesh holds up exceptionally well without rusting, sagging, or degrading. In addition, our stainless steel mesh is case-hardened in order to enhance it’s resistance to cutting, blunt force, etc. There are many non-name Chinese knockoff svcreen meshes ot there that look very similar, but which are weak and not secure (and yes, they are cheaper).
- The frame: Thick gage extruded aluminum is the standard for quality security door frames. Unlike rolled aluminum (which is cheaper, thinner and more malleable), extruded aluminum is pressed through a die under high pressure, resulting in a denser, more rigid profile. Aluminum is naturally corrosion-resistant and, when finished with a powder coat, holds up to sun, rain, and temperature swings with minimal degradation.
- The powder coat paint finish: Powder coating is baked onto the aluminum frame at high temperatures, creating a finish that is significantly more durable than liquid paint. It resists chipping, fading, UV bleaching, and moisture penetration – all of which matter in Sacramento’s climate where summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F and UV intensity is high. Our doors are powder coated at the factory using original RAL powder coat paints… and the quality of paint matters when it comes to putting up with the harsh sun, heat, and wet weather conditions of the Sacramento region.
While our security doors are warranted for 5 years, wiith proper care, the materials used in our top quality sliding security door are genuinely built to last a lifetime more in our Sacramento region.
Will a sliding security door slow down how quickly I can get in and out?
This is a practical lifestyle question that deserves a practical answer. The short version is: no. In fact, most people find that their new sliding security door SAVES them time coming in and out because they get to come in and out of a security door that slides silky smooth rather than their old herky-jerky-always-jamming or falling off the tracks sliding screen door. In fact, many customers have reported a significant reduction in blood pressure once they no longer have to deal with the frustratingly trashy old sliding screen door ;-).
Sliding security doors operate on the same glide-and-slide principle as your existing screen door, but using top and bottom wheels with seale stainless steel needle ball-bearing wheels that never require lubrication or maintenance.
- Smoother operation: Quality sliding security doors are installed on precision track systems designed for smooth, low-effort gliding. The added weight of the stainless steel mesh and heavy frame is negeted by proper track design and sealed stainless steel needle ball bearing roller hardware, so the door doesn’t feel laborious to operate.
- One-handed locking: Our sliding security doors are designed to be engaged with a single lever or handle motion – locking effortlessly – rather than requiring you to manually engage multiple individual locks.
- Emergency egress: This is a legitimate concern for homeowners with children or elderly family members, and it’s something we take seriously. We’ll show you how our locking configuration allows for quick exit in an emergency while still providing the security you need.
In day-to-day life, most homeowners report that the sliding security door becomes a completely natural part of how they use their home – the brief moment to unlock and slide it open is a small price for the security and peace of mind it provides.
What finishes and styles are available? Will it look out of place on my home?
Curb appeal matters, and we understand that homeowners won’t put up with rusty, ghetto-licious jailbars that look horribly out of place against a carefully maintained home exterior located in a nice neigborhood.
Luckily, our sliding security doors are specifically designed to look very similar to the standard sliding screen doors most homes already have and therefore blend seamlessly into the home as if nothing has been added….. Until an intruder attempts to gain nefarious access…. They soon realize they can’t get in easily and quickly move on to someone else’s home!
In addition to blending in like a normal sliding screen door, our sliding security doors are available in a range of powder-coated finishes designed to coordinate with the most common window frame color palettes:
- White a – clean and classic, ideal for light-toned stucco, painted wood, or vinyl exteriors
- Bronze and dark bronze – warm tones that complement brick, wood, and craftsman-style homes
- Black – increasingly popular for modern, contemporary, and farmhouse-style homes
- Almond and beige – neutral tones that blend easily with stucco and earth-tone palettes
The frame profiles themselves are designed to be proportionate and architectural-looking rather than heavy or industrial. When a sliding security door is properly fitted and finished to coordinate with your existing sliding door frame, the effect is cohesive – the security door reads as a purposeful design element rather than an afterthought.
During our on-site consultation, we will show you paint chip samples and look at your existing door framing, window frames, trim colors, and overall exterior palette before making finish recommendations. The goal is always a result that looks like it belongs.
What does the installation process look like, and how long does it take?
Installing a sliding security door is a professional job that requires precision – both to ensure actual security performance and bug-tightness, as well as for smooth, long-term operation. As our thousands of customer testimonial online reviews will testify, AtoZ Window Screens handles everything from professional on-site measurement through final walkthrough with our patented screenologist midas touch ;-)..
Here’s what the process looks like:
Step 1 – Consultation and measurement: We visit your home, assess the sliding door opening, check the frame condition, discuss your security priorities and finish preferences, and take precise measurements. Nothing is assumed from standard sizes.
Step 2 – Fabrication: Your sliding security door is custom-fabricated to the exact dimensions of your door’s framing and opening. This is not an off-the-shelf product – it’s built specifically for your home and it’s the number one reasy why our doors fit and function so perfectly versus the competition.
Step 3 – Installation day: Once the door is fabricated and ready, our installer arrives and typically completes the installation in 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the opening and whether a double-panel configuration is involved, leaving the area cleaner than how he found it..
The installation process includes:
- Removing any existing sliding screen door
- Installing the track system (if a dedicated security track is being used)
- Hanging and fitting the security door panel
- Installing and testing the locking hardware
- Adjusting rollers and track for smooth, even operation
- Final security check on all lock points and anti-lift features
- Go over care and maintenance instructions with the homeowner.
Step 4 – Walkthrough: Before we leave, we walk you through how to operate the locking system, demonstrate the anti-lift features, and answer any remaining questions.
How to prepare for installation day:
- Keep the sliding door area clear on installation day, removing potted plants, nicknacks, etc so the installer has plenty of room to do his magic.
- Secure any pets who might escape, get in the way, or come home with our installer if they are too cute to resist ;-).
- Your existing screen door doesn’t need to be removed beforehand – we’ll not only take it off for you, but we’ll also dispose of it for you free of charge…. Because trying to stuff a sliding screen door into a typical trash can is no fun at all ;-).
The whole process is designed to be straightforward and low-disruption, with most homeowners fully set up by the same afternoon we arrive.
